EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING THEORY
This theory is one of the oldest learning theories, dating back to philosophers like Aristotle. Experiential learning is simply just hands on learning, and consciously reflecting on that process.
Kolb's theory was published in the 1970's and was ground breaking in professional education. All learners have different amounts of experiential learning traits within themselves.
Constructivist and Social Learning
Four different types of adult learners:
Accommodating
Diverging
Converging
Assimilating
Kolb's theory is based on this chart (below), educators are urged to teach around the circle.
Concrete Experimentation
Evolve fully without bias in a new experience.
CE Case Study
Accommodating
"I created an learning solution and action plan that was based on the research and questions I had on this case study." - Sam, Experiential Learner
Active Experimentation
Use theories to make decisions and problem-solve.
AE Project
Assimilating
“I was assigned a case study in class about a failed training solution and needed to make a action plan for the learning solution.” -Sam, Experiential Learner
“I went to the library, where I researched other observations and theories for failed trainings, similar to the case study I was assigned.” -Sam, Experiential Learner
Abstract Conceptualization
Create concepts that integrate their observations into logically sound theories.
Diverging
Reflective Observation
Observe the new experience from many perspectives.
RO Reflection and Questions
“I thought about the case study and reflected on the different learning solutions that could be applied. ” -Sam, Experiential Learner
Converging
